In 1972, Amin declared “economic war” on Uganda’s Asian Population. [44]Uganda’s Asian Population, were in control of Uganda’s trade and manufacturing sectors. The Asian Population was also in control of the civil service.[45] Soon, over 70,000 asian holders of British passports were given three months to leave the country. The remaining businesses that were left over were given to Amin’s supporters.[46] Since Amin expelled Uganda’s Asian population, which was about 50,000 to 70,000 people, the economy started to collapse.[47] Without the appropriate resources to support them, manufacturing, agriculture, and commerce stopped.[48] Today, many people have forgotten Amin's expulsion of Asians, except for the Ugandan Asians themselves and their decedents[49]. Amin kicked out the Asians and Indians because they were running 80% of the economy. Amin thought that the land should only be ran by true black African Americans[50]. When interviewed a few years later about the incident, many Ugandan Asians stated "The order came as a complete shock and there was no real indication it was going to happen."[51] |
